chickens roosting

In November of last year, I started a petition (NSFW) to the CEO of Conde Nast (which "owns" reddit) to remove the misogynist hate groups hosted on the site. It didn't get enough signatures to go anywhere. However, since that time, the women of reddit have been amping up the pressure, and recently the story broke nationally. It's taken the form of vilifying this one dude who ran a lot of the reddits in question, and much as I love to see him getting his comeuppance, I'm feeling a bit exasperated. The problem isn't this one sick fuck, or even reddit's culture of casual dudebro sexism -- it's the fact that these groups operated for years without anyone going, "Wait a minute. What the fuck kind of world creates shit like this?"
