best. rejection. ever.

I love love love this book. I think you are an amazing and talented writer.

It kills me to do this BUT I'm not the right agent for you right now.

I think this book will sell, and nicely to a publisher who will launch it in a trade paper edition.  You'll need to find and build an audience to keep the series going. I have no doubt you can and will do this.

All this takes a lot of time though.  It takes a lot of planning and coaching from your agent.

Right now, I need to focus on my current authors who need that same amount of time and coaching.

That means I can only sign new fiction that is in the very top tier of thrillers--books that are high concept and that we hope will sell for a lot of money and get lots of in-house support.

This is all to say that you need an agent with a slightly less stuffed list and the time to devote to your career.  You deserve no less.  In fact, as your first fan, I insist upon it.

I think you are an amazing writer and I am looking forward to reading and talking about your books for many years to come.

Please do not look upon this as rejection but redirection.  I want you to have the very best representation. You deserve no less.

Your devoted fan,

[famous (to me) agent]

  1. Some questions:

    * Is this the same agent that has the blog?
    * If so, I have to question her motivation in building you up like that and then letting you down.
    * If not, did this person offer you any alternatives, along the lines of "You might try Joe Jones over at the Jones agency or Mary Smith over at the Smith agency?"

Everything she said is true, but of what use is it?

    Just asking...

    1. Yeah, I realized that there's probably a certain amount of blowing smoke up my ass, but at this point, I'm a sucker for anything that keeps me off the ledge. I did ask for some referrals, we'll see if I get any.
