Oh, how I love painting myself into a plot corner and then having to think my way out. It's just so damn much fun. I'm not even being sarcastic.
In other news, my recently-updated bifocals are hella strong, to the point that I have to use my weaker reading glasses for the computer. Then, I have another pair I use with the laptop. That is, I now effectively use four different pairs of glasses during the course of a normal day. If I'd known how many arcane and fascinating accessories were involved, I'd have gotten old a lot sooner.
